DECEMBER GIFT CHALLENGE

From car bombings to shootings to gas attacks, it seems that every time we turn on the news, there is a new report that is more horrific than the last.

When sin, evil, and tragedy are on full display through acts of terror, violence, and hatred—when ISIS attacks people's homes and white supremacists shamelessly perpetrate racism—it is time to pray.

Woman Praying

When sin, evil, and tragedy are on full display, it is time to pray.

Isaiah 41:10 says, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand."

God reminds us that He is sovereign through all events. He will never abandon those who believe in Him. Amidst the challenges and hard times we face—both personally and as a nation—His presence abounds.

Not sure what to pray? Here are four ways Scripture encourages us to pray:

  1. Pray for God to move in the midst of darkness and chaos — even turning it around for His purposes. At Leading The Way, we hear regularly from Muslims who are questioning their beliefs because of ISIS — and God is leading them to the Truth. God can use anything. Psalm 139:12 says, "Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you."
  2. Pray for victims of terror to draw near to God amidst the tribulations they are facing. Psalm 145:17-18 says, "The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."
  3. Pray for those who are seeking the Truth throughout the turmoil. Deuteronomy 4:29 says, "But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul."
  4. Pray for the enemies of the cross — those perpetrating violence and terror here at home and around the world. Matthew 5:44 says, "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Remember that no one is out of God's reach.

When something happens in the world that we cannot comprehend, we should turn to the Lord in prayer. God's strongest desire is for His children to come to Him in prayer and to spend time with Him. He is always ready to meet us.

Heavenly Father, I don't always understand the world that I live in today. It can be confusing, frustrating, and terrifying. Help me to remember that You are always in control. When all else fails, You never will. You are faithful and steadfast through trials and tribulations. May I never forget that. I call upon Your power and grace today and ask for You to bring peace, healing, and justice in the midst of the chaos happening around the world today. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
