QUESTION:
“What are the Biblical responsibilities of a faithful pastor or minister of the Gospel?”
ANSWER:
A minister of the Gospel has the solemn responsibility to lift up the Word of God, to teach the Word with integrity and sincerity, to explain the Word diligently and with simplicity, and to exemplify the Word in every aspect of his private and public life. Whether preaching from the pulpit or encouraging a discouraged believer, everything that pastor says must be consistent with the Truth of Scripture.
The apostle Paul said that a Christ-centered, Biblically-based, hard-working, Truth-preaching leader in the church is worthy of honor, love, and respect because of his work for the Lord. But, it’s critical that we do not allow this honor to become misplaced devotion. Church leaders should never be worshipped as if they were a Hollywood celebrity or the leader of a cult. This also doesn’t mean a pastor should be unaccountable for his actions or never confronted in love if he wanders from the Truth.
While our pastors and church leaders deserve our respect and love, only Jesus is to be fully trusted and worshipped. A pastor’s authority is not his own, it is derived solely from the Word of God. Therefore, the true measure of any pastor is his unwavering faithfulness to the Scriptures and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
