Grasping the Gravity of Sin and Grace
  • Scripture:
To truly grow in your relationship with the Lord, you have to go through the valley.

Read Hosea 1:1-3.

Like all prophets, Hosea was called by God to proclaim His words. But he was also called to experience what it’s like when God’s people praise Him with their lips while their hearts are far from Him. In other words, Hosea didn’t only tell the people God’s Truth; he also experienced the story of God and His wayward people.

In the book of Hosea, we see the natural consequences of covenant unfaithfulness toward God—tantamount to spiritual adultery. God shows us through His prophet the impact of our self-absorption.

God told Hosea, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, . . .” (Hosea 1:2). When we read these words in the Bible, we’re reading Hosea’s account at the end of his life. In retrospect, he’s telling us what sort of woman Gomer became. When he first married her, she was a wonderful woman. This is how Israel began her relationship with God, entering willingly into a covenant of love and faithfulness. God was saying to Hosea, “I want you to know how unfaithfulness feels to Me.”

I’ve often asked myself, Why did Hosea have to endure the heartache of betrayal? Undoubtedly, Hosea spent many sleepless nights wondering where his bride was, agonizing over her unfaithfulness. But those restless nights were also a gift. Hosea’s story has shown me brokenness is the only way we will ever understand the heart of God. It is through brokenness that we comprehend the nature of our sin and the unfathomable strength of God’s love.

Through his suffering, Hosea was able to understand in some small measure how God feels when we sin against Him. He could better understand the gravity of sin because he was on the receiving end of Gomer’s sin. He could begin to comprehend the heart of God and, therefore, grow in the knowledge of God. Mountaintop experiences may feel good, but they don’t last. To truly grow in your relationship with the Lord, you have to go through the valley.

The three children born to Hosea and Gomer all have terrible names, each one indicating how God would deal with His people. And yet Hosea saw a coming day when God would show His people—and the entire world—His great mercy. One day, God would come from heaven Himself to ransom us from our sin.

Prayer: Father, though I was lost in sin, rejecting Your Truth, You ransomed me through Christ. Thank You for Your astounding love. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
